Coming of Age
The coming of age paper was an interesting topic to write about as the first paper assignment because it was a deep topic. I didn’t have to write about a heavy experience for it to be deep though. I was able to show through the simple topic of doing laundry that I was not mature enough to call myself an adult yet. This paper gave me a moment to think about where I am maturity wise at this point in my life. It made me realize that as an adult and especially a grown woman, there are many responsibilities.
Music Paper
Writing the music paper was actually fun and interesting when I started to really analyze the songs I was thinking of using. It was interesting to me because I didn’t realize that a lot of societies stereotypes come from music since it has such a huge influence on people everywhere. The song I chose by Drake was interesting because I thought it showed a side that most people don’t expect but most women can understand it. It actually talks about a woman cheating on the man but just being better at concealing it. What was most interesting to me though was that a song like that can make a women look like a sneaky and conniving person, however, if it was in a reverse role most men would be thought of as players or really cool guys. This paper taught me a lot about how stereotypes can spawn from popular music because it sets trends and people will follow them.
College Essay
The college essay was actually very good for me to write because it gave me a chance to use an essay topic I needed to write for the University of Boulder Colorado. What was also really helpful was the activity done with the paper where our peers acted like a college admissions board and told us weather we would be accepted or not. It really put into perspective where I was at in terms of writing my college essays and how they would be portrayed to the college admission boards really reading them. This college essay was very personal to me because it talks about a tradition I grew up doing all my life. Doing this essay helped me to take a tradition like mine, something so small as eating dim sum, and using it to write an essay that no one would expect to read. This lesson proved extremely important to me and helped me get into several colleges.
